Father's Day and Random Thoughts

We took the day off today and celebrated Father’s Day. I realize that the calendar says the holiday is on Sunday but we like to be flexible. John and I will be out of town and we wanted to have a special day with our children. Hannah and I went shopping for a Father’s Day gift and I found this 100_2164 and this 100_2167. OK, those are for me. I have been looking for just the right purse for three months and I finally found one that suited me. It was on sale too! We looked at picture frames and didn’t see any that we liked. We looked at shirts and the ones we liked did not fit our budget. We ended up buying what Gabe had suggested in the first place, a movie. Flash forward to this afternoon - we took our favorite fast food to the park and had a picnic. It was cool under the pavilion but one step out in the sunshine and I felt like a snowball in July. I was melting fast.

Tomorrow, I have to pack and straighten up. Tomorrow evening we have a reception to go to at the local art museum where Gabriel’s artwork is on display. I have never even been to one much less been involved. My mom said that we could dress up or go casual. We are pretty casual whenever we can be!

I am really excited about our trip to Virginia. I checked the forecast and it’s much cooler there, now. It looks like we are going to arrive just in time for their heat wave. Ugh! The hard part will be leaving the kids. The last time that John and I went somewhere alone together for any length of time was in 2002 for our 15th anniversary – only a day and a half and in 1996 when we took a survey trip to Romania – 16 very long days. I think it's time to get away for a while. When was your last trip without the kids?

Love that bag! I've got a thing for stripes! I had two little children when I married my second and current ( and last) husband, so we were away for about 5 days on a honeymoon nearby. This past January we went to Mexico for a week- a first for both of us. We had a great time, but we were ready to come home and see our 4 kidlets at the end of those 7 days.

We've gotten away without the kids a few times but they're always lurking in your mind and it makes you glad to get home.

I love that honeysuckle lotion! I have a tube of it in my car. It smells so good. That is one of my all-time favorite smells.
You're not going to believe this - but the last time that Travis and I went away alone without the kids was never. (unless you count a few hour trips to Home Depot or Walmart together) We have never had family to keep them - and hate leaving them home alone. We are about to celebrate our 18th anniversary. I unfortunately married a home-body and he doesn't care about getting away anywhere - but his wife would like to go somewhere where I don't have to cook for anybody and I can have his undivided attention. We'll have to see.

Our kids are nearly all grown so travelling without them has become much easier now. The 2 that are still at home are 20 & 16 and I feel that 7-10 days away is my limit! Dave & I started getting away on a regular basis about 5 years ago. At that time our daughter Jessica, who is now 25, was still at home and in charge.

Our most recent trip was a week in April at Yosemite NP. If you look at my May archives, I posted pictures and a recap of our trip. In fact, the picture you see when you open my blog, is one I took of Half Dome and Stoneman Bridge on that trip!

Dave & I have discovered how important these trips are for our marriage. The time when we really needed them, when the kids were little, we couldn't afford it and since we lived out of state, had no family nearby to watch them!

Funny! I saw the lotion and bag and thought, "Huh? Her husband uses honeysuckle lotion and a purse?!" Then I read the rest of your post.

My husband and I just recently went away without the children back in April. It was the second time in 25 years, and both times were company (Read: Mandatory) trips. This recent one was to Cancun for 4 days. Not bad! But we called my parents and the children every day... .

I love the bag. The colors in the stripes are very cool.

It's great to have time away just the two of you. Sounds like you are overdue. My kids are grown so it's different. When they were little we did try to schedule away time at least once a year. My parents had a vacation home that they let us use and we took the kids one week and went one without.

Oh, yes! You're long overdue!
We don't get away often, but we did get away for a weekend in Feb. to go to a homeschool convention.

I will be praying for you while you're in Virginia! I loved living there! I don't know what part you're thinking about, but the whole state is so full of history and culture! It's a wonderful place to homeschool!

We lived in Northern Virginia close to Dulles Airport for 4 years (moved to IN a year ago): Ashburn, just east of Leesburg, not quite an hour outside of DC (depending on traffic). It was a great place to live, but very expensive. If that's anywhere close to the area you're considering, let me know and I can give you some people to contact. I went to a Calvary Chapel church there.

What a beautiful purse! I went Father's Day shopping today, too. Ended up buying a shirt & pants and a dark chocolate bar. No, not for me, silly. The large bag of chocolates is for me. HA!

That purse is so cute - I need a new one too, but I just haven't found 'the one' yet - LOL!

Actually my husband and I have NEVER been away from the kids (...with the exception of when I was in the hospital having another baby!)

Now that I'm not nursing anymore, I would LOVE a weekend alone with my husband...but I think I would have a hard time relaxing and I would keep thinking..."I wonder what the kids are up to ?"

I hope you enjoy your time together!

Blessings,
Michelle
