Making Space

Our washer and dryer that were supposed to be delivered last Monday finally arrived late Tuesday evening. I had cleared the laundry room closet out early Monday morning in preparation for them. It had been a convenient spot to store things temporarily. The empty closet seemed quite large and I envisioned just where the 13 gallon trash can, laundry baskets and some other paraphernalia would go. When the men delivered the washer and dryer and set them up, I saw those dreams vanish. The closet grew so much smaller with the addition of the huge appliances. Later, I told John and Gabe that I was completely content with a small under the sink trash can and if they felt like we needed the large one, would they please find room in their area of the tiny apartment. They weren’t willing to give up their space for the gargantuan garbage container and it was set aside to be donated.

Yesterday we devoted a good portion of the day to hanging pictures. In 20 years of marriage, one can collect a huge amount of items to hang on a wall. It really didn’t seem like much in a larger house but I don’t think we will have much blank wall space here when we are finished. John also put some shelves up in the laundry room closet and they look great! There’s still no room for the trash can but now there is plenty of storage for large pots, Tupperware, a cooler, etc.

I am still not ready to take pictures but I will try to get there sometime this week for your viewing pleasure and most importantly for my sanity! Meanwhile, here is a silly question for you. How big of a kitchen trash can does your family need?

I have a small garbage can hanging on the inside of the door under the sink. It is just a little larger than a plastic grocery shopping bag. It means that it gets emptied every day which cuts down on the smells! Of course we recycle here and compost so actually I have three small bins in various cupboards.

When I had kids living in the home the bigger the better. But now, it can be small - we don't make as much of mess.

I think we have a 12 gallon trash can. It seems to work. I know some people have them under the sink - but that would never work for us. We would fill it up too fast.

Mine's about the same size as DeeDee's. We have to keep ours under the sink or it gets knocked over by all the crazy running around and wrestling that takes place all over the house.
We are alloted one garbage can on the curb each week and for a family of five it's nearly impossible. We also recycle and compost and still can't make the one can limit! We pay a private company for a weekly pickup of a can that's probably 3 of 4 regular cans.
It amazes me that one family can produce so much garbage!!

We need bigger than under the sink, though I don't know how much it holds. I don't want to buy a really big one as I like to limit our garbage output...

Mine is about 27 inches high with the lid on, and about 16 inches wide. A white kitchen bag fits, but we always use black trash bags, and when the can gets full we pull it out and fill it with all the other trash cans from around the house, then take it out.
Wow, that was a lot of trash info. Maybe more than you wanted to know! :)

Put a small one under the sink, have it emptied every day into a big one outside. 13 Gallons is too big for inside the kitchen.

We use a 13 gallon bag in about a 8 or 9 gallon can which is stored under the sink. Of course, that means when the can is full the bag gets put on the floor by the wall until it's full and *someone* takes it out. I like jblieu's idea...ds probably won't, but I think we may implement it!

I am not sure what size our can is, but it's a big one. With 4 kids, it sure can fill up fast! Usually we have a big tower of garbage sacks stacked outside our house on garbage day.

I wanted to as you if I could post your recipes on the chef mommy blog on homeschool blogger, from your Karen's kitchen blog? I can link to your blog here if you'd like. I wanted to ask permission first. You have so many great recipes on there!

Thank you for letting me post your recipes! So far, I have the sugar cookies and the chocolate crinkles up. If you ever want to contribute any other recipes, feel free to send them in. I tried to get this blog to work before, and failed at it. I think I have a better system set up, and it is working really well! I also have a button for your side bar that says you are a recipe contributor. If you are interested in having a button, I can email you the code.

God bless!

Sounds like it's all coming together despite the little obstacles. I don't think our household could make it with a trash can under the sink.
