Lesson Planning

I'm still here! Just busy and I am afraid life is about to get busier. Right now I am working on lesson plans for Gabriel and Hannah. They will be doing a lot of independent study this year but still need a guide line. They will be doing American History and American Literature. I'm not using any curriculum for American Literature. I figure the best thing is to have them read something that lines up with the time period they are studying in American History. What do you think about Edgar Allen Poe? Is he a "must" or do we skip him like Stephen King? Your opinions are appreciated and I need to get back to my lesson plans! What are your kids studying this year?

I would definitely not skip Edgar Allen Poe - maybe read a selection or two like the Tell Tale Heart or something. At least a short story. He is a bit creepy - but necessary to be culturally literate!

Being busy is good - it has been therapeutic for me. I have neglected my blog somewhat for the busy-ness - but a real life is more rewarding than a cyber-life. (sshhhh - don't tell anyone!)

My girls are doing 20th Century Literature - and reading some neat selections for co-op.

I would walk with caution. I suggest to pre-read some things and pray about it. The Lord WILL guide you in the right way. I don't think being culturally literate is our goal as Christians. I would for sure NOT let my kids read S.K. =0P I too am REAL busy and hope to get things down on paper ! I just posted a similar post today myself. [0=

Hi Karen! I just wanted to leave my $.02 about Poe. You have been training your children with a Christian worldview for a while now and it would be my opinion that it is time to put that to a test under your watchful eye. I have my children read Poe and London, among other secular authors, in small bites, and then we discuss what they recognized in the literature that reflected the authors secular worldview.

We have had such a busy year taking care of babies that Emily still has work do to from last school year. She probably won't start her 11th grade studies until the beginning of the year, but that is ok. After 22 years of homeschooling, I've relaxed a bit about some things and I know that she will catch up.

Casey, Jessi and Mason are moving to Texas the end of next month, so we know that although our hearts are broken that they are leaving here, we will only have one baby 2 days a week after that. That is a much more managable schedule.

Love,
Patricia

I read Poe as a youngster. I really liked his poems "The Raven" and "Annabelle Lee". Some of his short stories were difficult to understand - one of them was a story about the plague...but I didn't understand that until I was much older.

Read and discuss is always a good thing. And be picky about which ones to read...not all of them are worth it. :-)

Have fun!!

I love Edgar Allen Poe. As with any literature you have questions about, it should always be preread by you or your husband. I also love reading the biographies of these authors as well. I love Tell Tale heart and the Raven. It just needs to be age appropriate.

You are cautious and I think that is the important thing with all materials.

Hey Miss Karen!
I'm just saying this based on personal preference, but the few things that I have read by Edgar Allan Poe, I loved. Annabel Lee is one of my favorites!

I loved Poe when I was in high school. Tell Tale Heart and The Raven... They still give me the creeps a little, but in a much better way than Stephen King! That guy (SK) HAS to be crazy in the head to come up with some of that stuff.

Definitely read some of Poe's short stories!

Hey Karen! I hope I am not too late to speak a piece...
I would not skip Poe entirely. He has some of the best examples of man vs. man, man vs. nature, etc. His imagery is great. The great part about his work is that the stories are short. I would preview them, because some amterial might be questionable for your family. Faves: Fall of the House of Usher, Masque of the red Death, The Oval Portrait, The Pit and the Pendulum, and of course, The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Great stuff and LOTS to discuss with this secular writer.

Please don't skip Edgar Allen Poe. He is considered the father of the modern detective story. He was a poet, literary critic, short story writer, playwright, editor & essayist. I don't see how you can study American Literature & leave him out. You could try "The Raven" for his poetry.

Love,
Theresa
