What are the Odds?

I have always wanted to serve on jury duty. Don’t ask me why because I don’t know. I just have. But with all of my moving around, it has never happened. Today, after a mere 45 days of living in this state, I received a letter from the jury commissioners. It was just a survey to see if I qualify to serve. The survey asked if I have lived in the state for 12 months and the county for 6 months. Both times, the answer was no. I don’t know if that helps or hurts my chances. Either way, I’m kind of chickening out on the whole ordeal. Of course I know that’s not an option. Have you ever served on jury duty?

I was in the jury pool - but never got called.

My Dad, however, has served enough time on jury duty that we're sure he'll never win the Reader's Digest Sweepstakes. Because - they're connected somehow. *LOL*

I was called once. But I didn't have to serve because they didn't need me by the time my number was up.

OK, I found your blog through Mary's S&T but I must confess I was intrigued by today's post so I got waylaid and didn't see the S&T. Jury duty! I just got my "survey" last week for U.S. District Court (9th district). I am SO excited. I hope, hope, hope they pick me. I have been served a couple of times (once for Superior Court in Seattle) and although I wanted to see it through (a murder trial!), I couldn't commit to the 6-8 weeks required. Sigh. I told the judge I homeschooled my children and they would have no other educ. opportunities while I served. I got dismissed! The gal next to me was so upset that the judge had dimissed me and not her! She said her job as a nursing supervisor was important and she couldn't take the time off. The judge saw it differently and didn't dismiss her. Now that my son is off to jr. college this year (after 20 years of homeschooling 4 kids) I have the time to serve and was thrilled to get the survey. Like you, I don't know if it means I have a chance. But golly! U.S. District Court! What "fodder" for stories (I'm an author).

Well there you go! I was on a jury once for a drunk-driving case. I was on another jury that really never got to meet because both parties settled before we could reconvene, and then a third time I wasn't picked. My husband seems to get picked all the time, and last time he was foreman! I'm so proud of him..... Best wishes!

I am currently on my second time of being called. The first time was for three months - I called in every Monday to see if my number had to report. Then half way through I had to be excused due to the illness of one of my children.
Currently I am on a six month long circuit court jury duty. So far, although I have gotten numerous letters to report, all were canceled but one, which I served on. It was a property condemnation case and it was incredibly boring, at least listening to the details was. Such as listening to an appraiser explain that he added and multiplied and divided blah blah blah blah blah. Since it is important to someone's life though, I did try my best to pay attention. It is kind of interesting to see how things work. And according to the court clerk, not all cases are quite as dull to listen to as that particular one. SO maybe you will get an exciting case.
Hope it works out for you!

No, but I was an assistant Trial Counselor once in the Navy. I had to help the Navy Lawyer get evidence to prosecute a man for failing to get a regulation hair cut. Was I mister NCSI or what?? It ended up the the man failed to report back to his Chief that he got the haircut that the barber said was "Barely passable" . Cost him $250.00 and a suspended reduction in rank.

Have a great day!

Love,

Dad

I received a jury duty letter last month and was so excited just to find out that I couldn't serve because we had moved to another county. :(

Ya wait all this time to get a letter (at least if you're weird like me you do) and then something like changing counties takes it from ya. Darn.

I would kind of like to serve on a jury also but I'm not a citizen so I always have to respond, thanks but no thanks!
