Getting Busy

Although the temperatures deny it, summer is gone. School has begun in earnest. Gabriel and Hannah started today with American History, American Literature and Physical Science. Weeknights are filling up. We already have Wednesday night Bible study and Thursday night volley ball. Now we have added drama class for Gabe and Hannah. This will be a radically different schedule from our Romanian years where we had homeschool and home church. In the winter time, I could stay in the house for 2 weeks and then wonder where I had last seen my purse.

Holly began her second week of school but in my opinion, it’s the first real week. She was excited to do real work. Fourth graders typically study state history. I think it’s great that we live in Virginia for this. Virginia has such a rich history. Her entire history textbook is state history. I have to wonder about some states, Idaho or North Dakota maybe. Do they have enough to fill a chapter? Perhaps I am showing my ignorance and forgive me if that’s where you are from! I’m just curious as to what other states do. What state are you from and what exciting things could your 4th grader tell about it?

Idaho- Do you visit with Cindy at Still His Girl? She is in my side bar. Funny, she lives in Idaho, and I was just thinking of asking her for some info on her state. I don't know anything about it, except that is maybe where the potatoes come from???

Hi Karen. I live in Michigan - cars, cherries, and the Great Lakes. Plus beautiful colors in the fall. I love the change of seasons here and can't imagine living anywhere else.
I remember as a kid (not just fourth grade) celebrating Michigan Week every year. The highlight for me was the day we got to have breakfast at school with all "Michigan made" products. That's probably when I learned Kellogg's was located in Michigan...
I love my state. You should come visit - when you aren't busy! LOL!

The people from Idaho have a lot to tell about it. My friend Kathie is from that great state.
We live in Texas as you know - and most of what I can tell you is what is NOT true about Texas. People don't wear 10 gallon hats here, everybody does not have a ranch, and everybody does not carry a gun.
I'll think of more and come back later - interesting - this was just on one of the unschooling yahoo groups that I am on - somebody's 7 yo was interested in the states.

we're from NC. my 4th grader is too learning State History. a GREAT book for HSers is NC in a Nut Shell. it is like a scrapbook too! We have lots of Corn fields, manufactring plants, not many textile ones left. We can tell about Sir Walter Raleigh, and the Lost Colony. a great resource is www.50states.com

WV history is required for 4th and 7th graders. In fourth grade they mostly learned things like the State animal, flower, motto, what the flag looks like, memorize the counties. Not exactly history, but that gets covered more in 7th grade.

Poor Holly with her finger. Ouch! I'm glad that she is enjoying School. Your homeschool schedule sounds busy but sooo fulfilling.

California has a rich history...and we also have a complete textbook dedicated to that subject alone. I love our missions, gold rush studies in particular...but there is so much more!
PS...I awarded you the "You Make Me Smile" award. Visit my blog to read about it and grab the button.
