Making Adjustments
Many people have asked me how am I adjusting to life in the States after so many years in a foreign country. Probably the hardest thing for me is the busyness of life here. Sunday morning is church. We don't have service on Sunday nights but the youth group meets so I have to drive Gabe and Hannah. Monday night is drama. Holly has Girl Scouts every other Tuesday afternoon and I just started doing a ladies Bible study - Beth Moore's Stepping Up. It is twice a month on Tuesdays and I think that sometimes it will be the same day as Girl Scouts and sometimes not. Wednesday night is church and Thursday night we have music practice. It's usually an hour or less but it's still a night out. Add to that grocery shopping, errands and picking up Gabe from work when it's dark and life gets busy! Now I realize that you are probably just as busy and maybe more so. But this is a drastic change for me.
In Romania we not only did homeschool but we had church at home too. Most of our church activities were at our house. I did not drive there so John did most of the grocery shopping. I would walk to the nearby stores when the weather was nice. But in the winter time, I could stay in the house for two weeks without going anywhere. When I felt like I was getting cabin fever, John would take me out somewhere but I would have to figure out where my purse was first.
With two teens and an almost 10 year old, I doubt that life will slow down anytime soon. I can already tell that this year is going to go by at a rapid pace. I had great plans of blogging much more frequently now that I am not teaching full time (for pay that is) and suddenly I discover that it's Friday again and I haven't written a word. Before I know it, it will be the Fourth of July and Christmas.

"but I would have to figure out where my purse was first."
That's too funny. And surely a sign of a slower paced life. Actually sounds kinda nice.
I hope your adjustment continues to come along.
Unfortunately, this is the norm here in the States.
My opinion is that this busyness causes so much trouble...even though it seems unavoidable. :(
My life used to be like that and then I finally decided that while all those activities were nice, they weren't necessary. Not for us anyway. I decided that if my four children were going to do anything it would be an activity they could all do, instead of individual activties. So everyone was in choir and everyone was in air rifle 4-H. This is the first school year that we are doing nothing, and it is sooo nice!

Kids and their activities do make life go fast. It's amazing to me. I can't believe that both kids are out of the house now and on their own.
I've just had a read through of your last 6 to 7 posts. Oh life does sound busy, I have to confess I would really struggle with all the activities and having to get there and back too. It must be such an adjustment after Romania. My friend is a Missionary in Bulgaria (she married her Bulgarian love) and really does not enjoy her time in the 'West' as she describes it, hating the rush, the busy-ness and all. She loves being with the Gypsies, having tea, listening and slowing down in Bulgaria.
We always say when we are out of Auckland on holiday that we will slow down, not do so much and it is a battle in such a busy city to slow down, there seems to be a constant 'buzz' as well as so much to do.
Happy New Year Karen.
I have to save some time away for day dreaming or it gets to me!
we try hard not to be involved in a lot, and it still ends up that way! I've been frustrated lately with how busy everything seems, even when I don't think we're that busy! At least compared to other families. I don't know how they do it. Even good things become wearying when there's just so much going on.
Don't get too caught up in the American way. Listen to David this past Sunday.
